Ertugrul, introduced in 1863, was a sailing frigate of the Ottoman Navy. While returning from a goodwill trip from Japan in 1890, she experienced a hurricane off the coastline of Wakayama Prefecture, subsequently drifted into a reef and sank. The naval mishap led to the loss of 533 seafarers, including Admiral Ali Osman Pasha. Just sixty-nine seafarers and also officers survived as well as returned home later on aboard two Japanese corvettes.
